Offensive Player of the Year: Marcus Holman for Ohio Machine 2014

Offensive Player of the Year: Marcus Holman

After finishing fourth on the team in points during his rookie campaign in 2013, Marcus Holman stepped into a major offensive role this past year, scoring a league-leading thirty-seven goals and earning him the team’s 2014 Offensive Player of the Year award.

It was evident in his debut in 2013 that Holman was a star. In his first game in the MLL, Holman netted one goal, one two point goal and two assists against the Hamilton Nationals. He finished 2013 ranked second on the team in points for a rookie, behind team leader Logan Schuss.

In week one of the 2014 season against the 2013 MLL runners-up, the Charlotte Hounds, Holman led the team in points, netting two goals and two assists to lead the Machine to a 1-0 start.

When the game is on the line, Holman is a go to guy, either scoring a big goal or making a play to help push the Machine to the next level.

“Marcus is the type of player that has a relentless attitude and the type of player that makes everyone around him better,” Machine Vice President & Head Coach Bear Davis said. “He gets the job done and he’s a tireless worker. His attention to details makes him the player that he is today.”

Averaging four points per game this past season, Holman proved his offensive capabilities by netting thirty-seven goals and ten assists to combine for fifty points. He led the team in goals scored and tied for first in total points with teammate Peter Baum.

In the game against the Florida Launch on August 9, Holman scored four goals and clinched the 2014 MLL goal-scoring title, while also helping his team get to their first ever playoff appearance.

Heading into the game against the Launch, the Machine was the best scoring offense with Holman leading the way.

Following the Machine’s Week 13 victory over the Rochester Rattlers, Holman was named the Warrior Offensive Player of the Week. Against Rochester, Holman set the club record for goals scored in a game with six, and tied the club record for points scored in a single game with eight. Holman also was named the Warrior Offensive Player of the Week following the Machine’s Week Five victory over Chesapeake.

This past year, Holman was chosen to represent Team USA in the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships in Denver, Colorado where he helped the team make the championship game, only falling to Team Canada.

Before the MLL, Holman played lacrosse at the University of North Carolina from 2010 to 2013, finishing his career with 84 goals and 49 assists, a combined 133 points. In 2013, he was named the team captain, led the team to an ACC Championship and was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award.

In the upcoming days, TheOhioMachine.com will announce the remaining two team awards which will include the Oil Can Award and Team MVP.

TESTIMONIALS FROM 2014 CAMPS

"My son participated in the North Carolina Breschi Camp at GFA in Westport, CT.  He had a wonderful camp experience.  I was able to stay and watch.  The coaches and staff were great.  They shared their skills, ran drills, and motivated the boys.  The speeches the coaches gave at the end of each day were meaningful to both my son and myself.  The stories and advice the staff shared with the boys were both sincere and insightful.  My son received a lacrosse head for playing solid D throughout the camp and he was very happy.  He wants to attend both lacrosse camps at UNC and again in Westport CT.  Thank you to the coaches and staff.  Good Luck in the 2015 UNC lacrosse season.  Go Tar Heels.  Sincerely,  Cindy"

"Hey Coaches,  I just would like to thank you for coming up to Connecticut for such an awesome camp.  It was such a great experience to be coached by some of the greatest coaches and players in lacrosse.  I hope to come down to UNC for more camps and training.  I can't wait for next summer to come to camp again.  It was a great experience and I had a great time.   Thank You  Garrett"

"Hi Coach Holman,  I just wanted to email you to Thank You for what a wonderful experience my son had at your CT Camp.  My son is a 5th grade goalie.  He has been on cloud nine since he came home.  He was always a Carolina Nut, but he has reached a new level.  The whole experience was just awesome.  My son loves playing lacrosse and every summer goes to two camps.  This was by far the best camp he has ever attended.  It went way beyond lacrosse and taught them important things for life.  Since coming home he has been paying attention to his body language, looking people in the eye and being a better brother.  I would highly recommend this camp to anyone.  Everyone of the players and coaches left an impression on him.  We are so impressed with The Carolina Way.  Great job!!!    Thanks Again,  Bill"

"Dear Coach Reed,  Thank you so much for the opportunity to present myself in front of such a great coaching staff.  To have Coach Breschi watching me play was an unbelievable experience.  I found the UNC WAY remarkable.  I learned that a player's family and education should always come before lacrosse and believe it is a great way to put the game into perspective.  I had a great time and would not have gotten this exposure without you.  I hope all goes well with your future camps.  Thank you again and GO HEELS!  Sincerely,  Peter"

"Our two sons loved the camp!!!! We hated that it was over in two days.  Is there anyway that next year you could make it a full week?  We traveled all the way from northern New Jersey(45 minutes away) and it was SO WORTH THE TRIP.  With all the camps that are out there we felt that yours was the only one we have attended that offered serious lacrosse instruction.  Our boys learned so much!  The extra benefit being that the current UNC players were the coaches, kids love to learn from older players.  Thanks for a great job.  Can't wait for next year!!  Leslie"

Hi Coach,  just wanted to let you know that you did a great job with the Mountain Lakes Camp.  I'm involved with lacrosse on the girls side in Princeton and to find something that is administratively run well, along with having quality coaching, is quite unusual.  I thought it stood out in terms of our experience with these things.  Keep up the good work and good luck with everything you are doing!  Thanks Sara"

Coach,  I wanted to reach out to you and thank you for allowing me to take part in the UNC Breschi Lacrosse Camp at Mountain Lakes HS.  I can say that I was able to take so much away from the camp and the men that were part of delivering a great product.  My college team will be starting its fall program soon and I can't wait to bring some of the great character building skills to those young men.  If you approve I would like to add the experience to my resume?  I was extremely impressed by the players and coaches that were in attendance and I hope to thank each of them individually if I can hunt down their contact info.  I hope I earned my keep and I am already reinforcing the topics Coach Breschi and Coach Holman touched on with my son.  The biggest impact, may be that he was able to hear how off-the-field opportunities and choices, in addition to the skills he was able to practice on the field,  will impact his life.  I was extremely encouraged to know that all my efforts as a lacrosse coach over the last 9 years is to the level that is expected from one of the top DI programs in the country.  As a parent I also learned what to look for in a coaching staff, program and high character teammates for my son or daughter if they choose to continue playing at a competitive level.  I look forward for my son to take part in your camp again.  I would recommend your camp to anyone.  Again, I can't  thank you enough for your generosity in allowing me to take part in the program.  Sincerely,   Coach Jace"

"My son had a great time and spoke about the "life lessons" learned during his 2 days there.  Wish it could run 3-4 days instead of just 2.  He will back next year!  Thanks Anna"

Coach,  I wanted to thank you and the whole staff once again for what I consider to be one of the very best camps my son has ever attended and a tremendous value for the price.  You were right about all the money we shell out at these showcases and I can't recall the last time he actually recieved individual instruction to help him continue to improve.  This seems especially the case for defenders, they rarely get access to qualified defensive coaches as most high school and club coaches were attack/middies...IT WAS JUST GREAT!!  As a parent, I was impressed and moved by Coach Breschi's focus on character,  after all, my goal is to raise a good person first and foremost.  We know teenagers rarely listen to us but my son listens to Coaches with reputations like Joe's.  To have Coach Breschi, Coach Holman and the current UNC players on the field, knowing their names, participating in the drills, was beyond my expectations and something we haven't seen happen with any Prospect Days.  Congrads on a GREAT CAMP!!   Kristin"
